Children's Fork and Spoon Sets Recalled by Peachtree Playthings Due to Choking Hazard; Sold at Dollar Tree and Deals

Name of Product: Scooby Doo, Tweety and Batman Fork and Spoon Sets

Units: About 127,000 Manufacturer: Peachtree Playthings, of Atlanta, Ga.

Hazard: The middle two prongs of the plastic fork can detach, posing a choking hazard to children.

Incidents/Injuries: Peachtree Playthings has received one report of a middle prong detaching from the fork. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves the Scooby Doo, Tweety and Batman plastic fork and spoon sets. The two-piece set is white plastic with cartoon images on the handle.

Sold at: Dollar Tree Stores and Deals during January 2010 for about $1 per set.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the recalled fork and spoon sets away from children and return them to Dollar Tree or Deals for a full refund.

Boys' Hooded Jackets with Drawstrings Recalled by Ten West Apparel Due to Strangulation Hazard; Sold at Burlington Coat Factory

Name of Product: Boys' Hooded Jackets Units: About 75

Importer: Ten West Apparel, of New York, N.Y. Manufactured in: China

Hazard: The children's jackets have drawstrings through the hood which can pose a strangulation hazard to children. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) (which were incorporated into an industry voluntary standard in 1997) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves Ten 1 West boys' jackets with a drawstring through the hood. They were sold in size 10/12 and are black cotton with a white fleece lining. "TEN 1 WEST" is printed on a hang tag on the center of the back neck.

Sold exclusively at: Burlington Coat Factory stores nationwide from November 2006 through September 2009 for about $12.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately remove the drawstring from the jacket to eliminate the hazard or return the garment to Burlington Coat Factory or to Ten West Apparel for a full refund.

Children's Bracelets Recalled by Chandigarh Fashion Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Children's Bangles Units: About 1,200

Importer: Chandigarh Fashion Inc., of Flushing, N.Y. Manufactured in: India

Hazard: The surface coating on the bracelets contains high levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves children's bangle bracelets. The bracelets which were sold in packets of 24, are gold with stripes of either red, maroon, black, orange or green.

Sold at: Chandigarh Fashion stores in Flushing, N.Y. and Sonia Selections stores in Chicago, Ill. from May 2007 through August 2008 for about $2.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the recalled bracelets from children and return the bracelets to the store where purchased for a full refund.

LELE & Company Recalls Children's Hooded Sweatshirt Sets with Drawstrings Due to Strangulation Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Children's hooded sweatshirt sets with drawstrings

Units: About 2,700 Manufacturer: LELE & Company Inc., of Los Angeles, Calif.

Hazard: The sweatshirts have a drawstring through the hood, which can pose a strangulation hazard to young children. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) (which were incorporated into an industry voluntary standard in 1997) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled at the neck and waist by drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets and sweatshirts.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported. Manufactured in: Vietnam

Description: This recall involves hooded sweatshirts sold under the "Maria Elena" and "Eddie" brand names. The sweatshirts were sold in children's sizes 8 through 14, and have various character designs on the front including "Princess," "Prince" and "Champion." Style number 4282 is printed on the back of the tag attached to the label.

Sold at: Dd's Discount, Frine Solarzvo and Toro Wholesale stores in California, El Carrusel and Hana Hosiery in Georgia, Lacala Design in Illinois, and La Revoltosa stores in Florida from August 2008 through August 2009 for between $6.50 and $9.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately remove the drawstrings from the sweatshirts to eliminate the hazard or return the product to the store where purchased for a refund.

What is CPR?

CPR is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

This is the lifesaving measure you can take to save your baby if they show no signs of life (breathing or movement).

CPR uses chest compressions and rescue breaths to circulate blood that contains oxygen to the brain and other vital organs until emergency medical personnel arrive. Keeping oxygenated blood circulating can help prevent brain damage — which can occur within a few minutes — and death.

Giving CPR isn't hard to do.

Follow these steps:

• Step 1: Check your baby's condition. Is your baby conscious? Flick their foot or gently tap on their shoulder and call out. If they don't respond, have someone call 911 or the local emergency number.

If you're alone with your baby, give two minutes of care as described below, then call 911 yourself.

Swiftly but gently place your baby on their back on a firm surface. Make sure they are not bleeding severely. If they are, take measures to stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the area.

Do not administer CPR until the bleeding is under control.

• Step 2: Open your baby's airway. Tilt your baby's head back with one hand and lift her chin slightly with the other.

You don't need to tilt an infant's head back very far to open her airway.

Check for signs of life (movement and breathing) for no more than ten seconds. To check for your baby's breath, put your head down next to their mouth, looking toward their feet. Look to see whether their chest is rising and listen for breathing sounds. If they are breathing, you should be able to feel their breath on your cheek.

• Step 3: Give your baby two gentle breaths. If they aren't breathing, give your baby two little breaths, each lasting just one second. Cover your baby's nose and mouth with your mouth and gently exhale into thier lungs only until you see their chest rise.

Remember that a baby's lungs are much smaller than yours, so it takes much less than a full breath to fill them. Breathing too hard or too fast can force air into the infant's stomach or damage their lungs.

If the baby's chest doesn't rise, their airway is blocked.

Give the baby first aid for choking. If the breaths go in, give your baby two breaths in a row, pausing between rescue breaths to let the air flow back out.

• Step 4: Give her 30 chest compressions. With your baby still lying on their back, place the pads of two or three fingers just below an imaginary line running between your baby's nipples.

With the pads of these fingers on that spot, compress the chest 1/2 inch to 1 inch. Push straight down.

Compressions should be smooth, not jerky.

Give her 30 chest compressions at the rate of 100 per minute. When you complete 30 compressions, give two rescue breaths (step 3, above).

•Step 5: Repeat compressions and breaths. Repeat the cycle of 30 compressions and two breaths. If you're alone with your baby, call 911 or the local emergency number after two minutes of care. Continue the cycle of compressions and breaths until help arrives. Even if they seem fine by the time help arrives, you'll want to have your baby checked by a doctor to make sure that their airway is completely clear and that they haven't sustained any internal injuries.

• Step 1: Assess the situation quickly. If your baby is suddenly unable to cry or cough, something may be blocking their airway, and you'll need to help your baby get it out. They may make odd noises or no sound at all while opening their mouth, and their skin may turn bright red or blue.

If they are coughing or gagging, their airway is only partially blocked. In this case, let your baby continue to cough. Coughing is the most effective way to dislodge a blockage.

If your baby isn't able to cough up the object, ask someone to call 911 or the local emergency number while you begin back blows and chest thrusts (see step 2, below).

If you're alone with your baby, give two minutes of care, then call 911. On the other hand, if you suspect that your baby's airway is closed off because their throat has swollen shut, call 911 immediately.

Your baby may be having an allergic reaction — to something they ate or to an insect bite, for example — or they may have an infection, like croup. Also call right away if your baby is at high risk for heart problems.

• Step 2: Try to dislodge the object with back blows and chest thrusts. If your baby can't clear their airway on their own and you believe something is trapped there, carefully position your baby face down on your forearm with your hand supporting their head and neck.

Rest the arm holding your baby on your thigh. Support your baby so that her head is lower than the rest of her body.

Then, using the heel of your hand, give your baby five firm and distinct back blows between her shoulder blades to try to dislodge the object.

Next, place your free hand (the one that had been delivering the back blows) on the back of your baby's head with your arm along her spine. Carefully turn her over while supporting her head and neck.

Support your baby face up with your forearm resting on your thigh, still keeping her head lower than the rest of her body.

Place the pads of two or three fingers just below an imaginary line running between your baby's nipples. To give a chest thrust, push straight down on the chest 1/2 inch to 1 inch, then allow the chest to come back to its normal position.

Give five chest thrusts. The chest thrusts should be smooth, not jerky. Continue the sequence of five back blows and five chest thrusts until the object is forced out or your baby starts to cough.

If your baby coughs, let them try to cough up the object. If your baby becomes unconscious at any time, they will need modified CPR.

Give your baby two rescue breaths. If the air doesn't go in (you don't see the chest rise), retilt the head and try two rescue breaths again. If the chest still doesn't rise, give 30 chest compressions.

Look in your baby's mouth and remove the object if you see it. Give two more rescue breaths, repeat the chest compressions, and so on, until help arrives.
